I posted a brief history of Hard to Handle, for those interested:
http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2013/12/hard-to-handle-1969-1971.html

(Note to WT: Extensive research has determined that the 8/6/71 H2H is, in fact, the 12th best version. The findings were suppressed, though, for fear of a public outcry...

OK, just kidding.)

Ahem, yes--I can suppress anything, including the GoP (singular, Hell yea!; plural? well, I wish...).

But 4-29 still tops the list--so I hear.

quite an extensive listener compiled list here:

http://headyversion.com/song/110/grateful-dead/hard-to-handle/

should make the Prime Minister happy, now GoP you might want to avoid this list as they did not rate our favorite as "the best"

Ha--never seen this before; thanks, Bill; that was sorta along the lines of what I told you guys about--polling my friends as to which version was "best", blah, blah, blah...

I scanned and found that in general, versions of songs I thought were great were at least mentioned in the listing provided at the site, but quickly realized, there are only a few songs for which I have this strong sense of "this ONE's the BEST!", ya know?

Really, it's just HtoH, and then, on a much more personal level, I think a GREAT deal about the absurd energy level of the 6-14-68 St St, so much so that I rank it as an all time great, as well as the 12-29-68 version of TOOne...finally, I view the Eleven from 2-11-69 and DS from 9-19-70 as my favs, and maybe "top ten" for most folks, but after that, I don't have any versions of other songs that I would feel comfortable throwing out to some group and defending them as "best EVER"...

We haven't done that kind of thing here all that much, really.

Thank you so much for the extensive Hard to Handle research.

Heard my first that 1970-06-04 SF summer night. Longer isn't always better. Don't know if the band would have stretched things out longer though, if it hadn't been for sound problems and that version with its' repeated lyrics can be patched nicely.

If a song sounds GREAT the very first time you hear it, it says a lot about the performance and the song. Hard to Handle and so many other songs we heard that night for the first time, it was 1970 afterall, sounded great. The element of surprise and the GD were really workin' it!

Am very thankful that they'd dropped the slide by then, as Hard to Handle has gotta be punchy. Maybe only Duane could have pulled off the slide, but Greg's vocals, probably not. It's gotta be Pig, and let's give Bob a lot more credit for his intros and fills, while he continues to work on his lead work.

Later that same evening he and the band absolutely nailed It's a Man's Man's Man's World, Good Lovin' and Midnight Hour.

At last - another LiA post! Great work. This is one of my favourite 70/71 short but jammy songs so it's intriguing to see the evolution.

One version you didn't mention, which isn't too remarkable and is another early/mid '69 slide guitar version, is 17 April from Download Series 12. It's available as an official release so might be worth including in your list, although as a performance I don't think it warrants to much close attention.

Incidentally I think 17 April contains one of the best officially released TIFTOOs.

12th...may be a little harsh, but EVERYONE agrees it is not #1
